Maymanah Islam however found herself in the spotlight back in 2004 when her father was denied entry into the U.S. because his name, Yusuf Islam, was found on a No-Fly list. The U.S. had just suffered the 9/11 attacks a few years back and was quite jittery about terrorism.
They, therefore, set up several procedures, including a no-fly list. People whose names were on the list were deemed to have terrorist links and were forbidden entry into the U.S. In September 2004, Maymanah and her dad were flying from London to Washington when their flight was diverted to Maine. Her father was subsequently detained by the FBI. He denied having any links to terrorists but this fell on deaf ears. He was asked to leave the U.S. while Maymanah was allowed to stay with one of her uncles in the U.S.
The whole saga caused an uproar with the deputy secretary-general of the Muslim Council of Britain criticizing what had happened as a slap in the face of sanity. On a personal note, it was a very agonizing time for father and daughter who were forcefully separated from each other. Yoriyos Adamos Also Serves as His Dad’s Manager
Cat Stevens has performed with his son on several occasions. The award-winning singer has even revealed that it was his son that helped him to rediscover his passion for music. According to him, being in close proximity to his son’s guitar tempted him to pick up the instrument and once he did so, it was like a floodgate was opened. He could play and sing some words that he had been writing and this motivated him to rejig his musical career. Cat Stevens dropped his first album in 28 years, An Other Cup, in 2006.
